Pope Francis: A Beacon of Humility and Hope Enters Eternal Rest

The Peoples Pope

On April 21, 2025, Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was called home to the Lord at the age of 88, following complications from a stroke and heart failure. His passing brings to a close a profoundly influential chapter in the history of the Catholic Church and the global community.

A Shepherd with a Servant’s Heart

Elevated to the papacy in 2013 as the Church’s 266th pope, Pope Francis was a historic figure: the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to serve as the Bishop of Rome. His time as pontiff was defined by an unyielding dedication to humility, inclusivity, and social outreach. He consistently championed the rights and dignity of the poor, the marginalized, and the forgotten, while calling the global Church to walk more closely with those on the edges of society.

His Reach Beyond the Church

Pope Francis’s voice resonated far beyond the boundaries of the Catholic faith. A passionate advocate for environmental care, he issued the landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, urging humanity to take immediate and moral responsibility for the stewardship of the Earth. He also worked tirelessly to promote interreligious dialogue and unity, including a groundbreaking encounter with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in 2019, setting a new standard for peaceful cooperation between faiths.

Global Mourning and Reflection

Leaders from around the world have expressed their sorrow and admiration in the wake of Pope Francis’s death. French President Emmanuel Macron hailed him as “a man of humility who stood with the vulnerable.” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer remembered him as “a pope for the poor, the downtrodden and the forgotten.” Belgian King Philippe and Queen Mathilde offered their condolences, recalling his profound presence during his visit to Belgium and praising his enduring call for peace and justice.

A Modest Goodbye

Fulfilling his personal wishes for simplicity even in death, Pope Francis will be interred at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. The faithful will have an opportunity to pay their respects during public viewing days at St. Peter’s Basilica, leading up to the funeral on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square.

A Legacy That Transcends Generations

The memory of Pope Francis will live on through his relentless pursuit of compassion, mercy, and reform. He envisioned a Church that listens more than it speaks, that walks with the wounded, and that uplifts the voices of those often silenced. As the Church now mourns the loss of a beloved shepherd and looks toward the future, the light of his leadership and message of hope will continue to guide hearts and minds for generations to come.
