Diving at Sri Lanka

A vibrant storybook beneath the sea

Scuba diving in Sri Lanka is like flipping open a vibrant storybook beneath the sea. With over 1,300 kilometers of coastline, the island offers a treasure trove of dive sites—from coral gardens and dramatic drop-offs to historic shipwrecks and underwater caves.

🌴 Top Diving Destinations

  • Unawatuna & Hikkaduwa (Southwest Coast)
Ideal from October to April, these spots are perfect for beginners and seasoned divers alike. Expect colorful coral reefs, reef sharks, and even the occasional turtle. Unawatuna is a popular choice with access to 16 dive sites, including 5 shipwrecks.

  • Trincomalee & Nilaveli (East Coast)
Best from May to October, this region boasts crystal-clear waters and sites like Swami Rock and Navy Island, where you can explore coral-covered ruins and spot moray eels, rays, and reef fish.

  • Negombo (West Coast)
Close to Colombo, this area is home to Sri Lanka’s only PADI 5-star Development Center, offering everything from beginner dives to technical diving courses.

  • Kalpitiya & Pigeon Island
Known for soft corals and encounters with manta rays, reef sharks, and even whale sharks during the right season.

🐠 What Makes It Special?

  • Year-round diving, thanks to alternating monsoon seasons on each coast

  • Wreck diving galore—like the SS Conch and British Sergeant

  • Warm waters (27–30°C) and visibility up to 15 meters

  • PADI-certified operators and gear rentals available island-wide

Whether you're a first-time diver or a deep-sea explorer, Sri Lanka’s underwater world is rich, diverse, and waiting to be discovered.
